What Experts Say
Montelukast belongs to a class of medicines called leukotriene receptor antagonists. It works by blocking leukotrienes, natural chemicals in the body that cause airway swelling, tightening and mucus production during asthma and allergy episodes. Blocking their action reduces inflammation in the airways and nasal passages.
Because montelukast works to prevent inflammation rather than reverse a sudden spasm, it is taken as a daily preventer and is not meant to stop an asthma attack once it has started. Most patients continue using their usual rescue inhaler alongside montelukast unless a doctor advises otherwise.
Regulators have highlighted rare but serious mood and behavior changes linked to leukotriene receptor antagonists, so doctors advise monitoring for agitation, sleep disturbance or unusual thoughts, especially in younger patients. Reporting any such changes promptly allows for safer and timely adjustments to treatment.
