What Experts Say
Montelukast sodium belongs to a drug class called leukotriene receptor antagonists. Doctors explain that it blocks chemicals in the body called leukotrienes, which are released during an allergic or asthmatic reaction and cause airway muscles to tighten and swell. By blocking these chemicals, montelukast keeps airways more open and reduces inflammation over time.
Pediatricians commonly prescribe the 5 mg chewable strength for children between 6 and 14 years because it matches this age group dosing needs while remaining easy to administer. Experts note that montelukast is not a rescue medicine and will not stop an asthma attack that has already started, so it must always be paired with a fast acting inhaler for emergencies.
Clinical guidance also stresses monitoring for mood or behavior changes after starting the tablet, since regulatory reviews have linked leukotriene receptor antagonists to rare neuropsychiatric effects in some patients. Doctors recommend regular follow up visits to confirm the medicine is working safely.
