Moveryl Capsule Benefits
- Targets the COX-2 enzyme, lowering the risk of stomach irritation compared to older NSAIDs
- Reduces joint pain, stiffness, and swelling in arthritis
- Once or twice daily dosing improves convenience for long term arthritis management
- Suitable option for patients who need NSAID pain relief but have a sensitive stomach
What Experts Say
Celecoxib selectively blocks the COX-2 enzyme responsible for pain and inflammation, while largely sparing COX-1, the enzyme that protects the stomach lining. This selectivity gives it a lower gastrointestinal risk profile than nonselective NSAIDs like diclofenac or ibuprofen, though the cardiovascular risk remains a class effect.
Physicians in Pakistan frequently choose celecoxib for patients with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis who also have a history of stomach ulcers or gastritis, since gastrointestinal disease is common in the general population. Even so, the lowest effective dose is preferred because cardiovascular risk remains present.
Kidney function and blood pressure should be checked periodically in patients using celecoxib for more than a few weeks, especially older adults or those with hypertension. Drug interactions, particularly with fluconazole and blood thinners, are also reviewed before starting long term therapy in routine clinical practice.

Drug Interactions
- Fluconazole: This antifungal raises celecoxib blood levels significantly, so a lower celecoxib dose is usually needed.
- Warfarin and other anticoagulants: Celecoxib can increase bleeding risk and INR when combined with blood thinners.
- ACE inhibitors and ARBs: Celecoxib may reduce their blood pressure lowering effect and increase kidney strain.
- Lithium: Celecoxib can raise lithium blood levels, increasing the risk of toxicity.
- Aspirin: Combined use increases gastrointestinal bleeding risk without added cardioprotective benefit.
- Diuretics: Celecoxib may reduce their effectiveness and raise the risk of kidney problems.
Risks and warnings
- Cardiovascular risk: Celecoxib may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, particularly with long term use or high doses.
- Gastrointestinal bleeding: Although lower than with older NSAIDs, celecoxib can still cause stomach ulcers or bleeding.
- Sulfonamide allergy: Avoid use if you have a known allergy to sulfa drugs, as celecoxib is chemically related.
- Kidney function: Use cautiously in patients with reduced kidney function or those taking diuretics.
- Pregnancy: Avoid use after 20 weeks of pregnancy due to risk to fetal kidney development.
- Heart surgery: Do not use for pain around coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
