Nebra Ointment 0.3% Benefits

  • Ointment base keeps the antibiotic on the eye surface longer than drops
  • Convenient for nighttime dosing since blurred vision matters less during sleep
  • Reduces pain, redness, and discharge from bacterial eye infection within days

What Experts Say

Tobramycin belongs to the aminoglycoside class of antibiotics. It binds to the bacterial ribosome and blocks protein synthesis, killing a wide range of gram negative organisms including Pseudomonas aeruginosa as well as gram positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus.

Physicians often prescribe Nebra Ointment 0.3% for nighttime use alongside tobramycin eye drops during the day, since the ointment base keeps the antibiotic in contact with the eye surface far longer than a drop. Most courses run five to seven days, and doctors usually advise continuing it for a day or two after symptoms clear to prevent early relapse.

Doctors avoid prescribing tobramycin for viral or allergic conjunctivitis, since antibiotics offer no benefit there and unnecessary use encourages resistant bacteria. Prolonged courses are discouraged too, since aminoglycoside overuse can disturb the eye's normal microbial balance and, in rare cases, slow corneal healing.

  • Apply a thin ribbon of ointment, about 1 to 1.5 cm, inside the lower eyelid.
  • Close the eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes and roll the eyeball to spread the ointment evenly.
  • Avoid touching the tube tip to the eye, eyelid, or any other surface to prevent contamination.
  • Remove contact lenses before application and wait until the infection clears before reinserting them.
  • Use at the frequency and duration your eye specialist prescribes, usually 2 to 3 times daily.
  • Wipe away excess ointment with a clean tissue and avoid rubbing the eye afterward.

Drug Interactions

  • Other Topical Eye Medications: Using other eye drops or ointments at the same time can dilute or wash out Nebra Ointment 0.3%, so space them at least 5 to 10 minutes apart when both are prescribed.
  • Other Aminoglycoside Antibiotics: Combining with systemic aminoglycosides such as gentamicin or amikacin may add to toxicity risk, though this is minimal with topical eye use.
  • Contact Lens Solutions: Avoid using contact lens solutions or reinserting lenses during treatment, since this can interfere with healing and antibiotic contact time.

Risks and warnings

  • Allergic Reaction: Stop use immediately if itching, swelling, redness, or rash develops around the eye, since cross sensitivity with other aminoglycosides can occur.
  • Prolonged Use: Extended use beyond the prescribed course can allow resistant bacteria or fungi to overgrow in the eye.
  • Corneal Healing: Ointment formulations may slow corneal wound healing, so use cautiously after eye surgery or injury.
  • Contact Lenses: Remove contact lenses before applying the ointment and avoid wearing them until the infection has fully resolved.
  • Not For Injection: This ointment is for external eye use only and must never be injected into the eye.
  • Pregnancy And Breastfeeding: Discuss use with your doctor first, since systemic absorption from the eye is minimal but not zero.
  • Children: Safety and effectiveness in infants under 2 months of age have not been firmly established.
