What Experts Say
Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that stops bacteria from making the proteins they need to survive. It is especially useful against Pseudomonas, a stubborn germ that can cause serious corneal infections. Applied as a drop, it reaches high levels in the eye surface tissues. Symptoms such as discharge and redness typically ease within 2 to 3 days of starting.
Most bacterial conjunctivitis improves within 5 to 7 days with correct use. Many red eyes in Pakistan are viral or allergic, where antibiotic drops do not help, so a doctor should confirm the cause first. Fresh drops should be used for each new infection.
The full course should be finished even when the eye looks better. Hygiene such as handwashing and not sharing towels helps stop the infection from spreading to family members. Contact lens wearers should switch to glasses until the eye is fully healed.
