What Experts Say
Doctors worldwide consider Metformin the first choice medicine for type 2 diabetes. Major health bodies such as the American Diabetes Association recommend it as the starting treatment for most adults with high blood sugar. In Pakistan, where diabetes affects a large share of adults, Metformin remains the most prescribed oral medicine for this condition.
Metformin works by reducing the amount of sugar the liver releases into the blood. It also helps the body respond better to insulin, so cells absorb glucose more effectively. Unlike some other diabetes medicines, it does not push the pancreas to make more insulin, which is why it rarely causes low blood sugar on its own.
Experts note that Metformin has a strong safety record after decades of use. Mild stomach upset or loose stools are common when starting treatment, but these usually settle within a few weeks. Doctors recommend regular kidney function tests since Metformin is cleared through the kidneys, and dose adjustments may be needed in people with reduced kidney function.
