What Experts Say
Nicorandil combines two actions in one tablet. It opens potassium channels to relax blood vessel walls and also has a nitrate like effect, together widening the arteries that supply the heart with blood and reducing the heart's overall workload during physical activity or stress.
A distinctive risk with this medicine is ulceration, which can affect the mouth, skin, eyes or gut and sometimes appears months after starting treatment, occasionally after a dose increase. Any unusual or non healing ulcer during treatment should be reported to a doctor, since stopping the medicine usually allows the ulcer to heal over time.
Because nicorandil lowers blood pressure, it is generally avoided alongside medicines for erectile dysfunction that work in a similar way, due to a risk of a dangerous and sudden blood pressure drop. Regular follow up and a review of all current medicines helps balance angina control against these known risks.
