What Experts Say
Doctors across Pakistan prescribe norfloxacin for uncomplicated urinary tract infections because it concentrates well in urine against common gram negative organisms. As a fluoroquinolone, it blocks bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, stopping bacteria from replicating their genetic material. This mechanism keeps it effective even against organisms resistant to older antibiotics.
Physicians recommend taking norfloxacin on an empty stomach, since food and dairy reduce its absorption. Adequate hydration is usually advised to support kidney clearance and lower the risk of crystal formation in urine. Course length is generally kept short, often three to seven days, since fluoroquinolones carry a higher risk profile with prolonged use.
Clinicians stay cautious prescribing this drug class for older adults or patients with existing tendon problems, given the recognized risk of tendon rupture. Careful patient selection, along with dose adjustment in reduced kidney function, helps balance strong antibacterial activity against these safety concerns.
