How to use Optidine / Eye Drop 0.1% 5ml?
- One drop in each affected eye, twice a day at roughly eight hour intervals.
- Four months is the usual maximum length of continuous use unless a doctor advises longer treatment.
- Contact lenses should come out before the drop goes in, with a wait of at least fifteen minutes before putting them back.
- A clean fingertip and a tilted head help the drop land accurately without touching the eye surface.
Drug Interactions
- Other ophthalmic medicines: A gap of about five minutes between different eye drops helps each one absorb properly.
- Sedating oral antihistamines: Combined use is unlikely to cause a major interaction but can add to overall drowsiness in some people.
- Contact lens solutions: Direct contact with lenses during dosing should be avoided since the preservative can affect lens material.
Risks and warnings
- Preservative sensitivity: The benzalkonium chloride preservative can irritate the eyes of sensitive users and may discolor soft contact lenses.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: This eye drop is not generally recommended without a doctor's advice during these periods.
- Dry eye or corneal issues: Frequent use needs closer monitoring in people who already have a compromised eye surface.
- Allergy to the drug: Anyone with known hypersensitivity to olopatadine or the other ingredients should avoid it.
Side Effects
- A mild burning or stinging feeling right after application.
- Headache in some users.
- A dry sensation in the eye.
- Blurred vision for a short period.
- Rare but serious eye surface damage with long-term heavy use, which needs prompt medical review.
Storage Conditions
Room temperature storage away from direct light keeps this eye drop stable. A closed cap between uses and a spot out of children's reach are both important, and the bottle should be discarded four weeks after opening.
