Otosporin combines two antibiotics, Polymyxin B Sulphate and Neomycin Sulphate, with the corticosteroid Hydrocortisone. Polymyxin B and Neomycin work together to kill a wide range of bacteria that commonly infect the outer ear canal, including Pseudomonas and Staphylococcus species. Hydrocortisone reduces the swelling, redness and itching that come with the infection, so pain often eases faster than with an antibiotic alone.

This ear drop works only on the outer part of the ear canal, not deeper structures. Doctors generally avoid it when the eardrum is perforated or a grommet is in place, because Neomycin can be toxic to the inner ear and may affect hearing if it crosses into the middle ear. A doctor checks the eardrum before prescribing it, especially in children.

Most courses run for about seven days, and symptoms usually start improving within 48 to 72 hours. Using it for longer than advised increases the chance of resistant bacteria or fungal overgrowth in the ear canal, so it should not be used beyond the prescribed course without a follow up check.

How to use Otosporin Ear Drop 5ml?

• Clean the outer ear gently before use, if advised by your doctor
• Lie down or tilt the head sideways with the affected ear facing up
• Instil the prescribed number of drops, usually 3 to 4 drops, into the ear canal
• Gently pull the earlobe up and back in adults, or down and back in children, to help the drops flow in
• Stay in this position for 2 to 3 minutes so the drops settle into the ear canal
• Use 3 to 4 times a day or as directed by your doctor, usually for up to 7 days
• Avoid inserting cotton buds or other objects into the ear after applying the drops

Drug Interactions

• Other ototoxic drugs such as injectable aminoglycoside antibiotics (Gentamicin, Tobramycin) may add to the risk of hearing damage
• Loop diuretics such as Furosemide can increase the ototoxic effect of Neomycin if used together
• Other topical ear or steroid preparations should not be combined without medical advice, to avoid excess corticosteroid exposure
