What Experts Say
Diclofenac potassium belongs to the NSAID class and works by blocking cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and COX-2) enzymes. This reduces the production of prostaglandins, the chemical messengers responsible for pain, swelling and fever. Because it targets the inflammatory pathway directly, it tends to work faster on acute pain than simple analgesics.
Clinical literature classifies diclofenac potassium as having a rapid onset of action compared to diclofenac sodium, since the potassium salt dissolves and gets absorbed more quickly in the stomach. This makes it a common first choice for acute flare ups of arthritis, sports injuries and post surgical pain where speed of relief matters.
Like all NSAIDs, diclofenac carries a dose dependent risk to the stomach lining, kidneys and cardiovascular system with prolonged use. Physicians generally recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary, with periodic monitoring for patients who need it for chronic joint conditions.
