What Experts Say
Fever in children is a natural immune response, and paracetamol remains the first line choice for pediatric fever management because of its established safety profile when dosed correctly. Pediatricians generally treat fever only when it causes visible discomfort, not just to lower a thermometer number, since mild fever is rarely harmful on its own.
Dosing calculated by body weight, rather than age alone, gives greater accuracy since children of the same age can vary considerably in weight. A common range is 10 to 15mg per kg per dose, repeated every 4 to 6 hours, which keeps blood levels effective while limiting total daily exposure and overdose risk.
Compared with NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, paracetamol carries a lower risk of stomach irritation and is generally considered gentler for children with dehydration from fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. It does not affect platelet function or kidney blood flow the way NSAIDs can, making it a preferred first option for straightforward childhood fever and pain.

Drug Interactions
- Warfarin: Regular use of paracetamol with warfarin can increase the blood thinning effect and raise bleeding risk, so monitoring is needed
- Other Paracetamol Containing Products: Combining this suspension with other cold, flu, or pain medicines containing paracetamol can lead to accidental overdose
- Alcohol: Combining paracetamol with alcohol increases the risk of liver damage, so alcohol containing products should be avoided during treatment
- Enzyme Inducing Medicines: Anti-seizure medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine can increase the risk of liver toxicity when taken alongside paracetamol
Risks and warnings
- Overdose Risk: Giving more than the recommended dose can cause severe liver damage, and overdose effects may not appear for 24 hours or more
- Maximum Daily Dose: Do not exceed 4 doses or the maximum weight based daily paracetamol limit in any 24 hour period
- Hidden Paracetamol Content: Check other cough, cold, or fever medicines the child is taking, since many contain paracetamol and combining them raises overdose risk
- Liver Disease: Use with caution in children with existing liver problems, and consult a doctor before giving this suspension
- Persistent Fever: See a doctor if fever lasts more than 3 days or pain lasts more than 5 days despite using this suspension
- Allergic Reaction: Stop use and seek medical help if the child develops rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing after taking this suspension
