What Experts Say
Paracetamol works by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis within the central nervous system, which lowers the hypothalamic set point responsible for fever. It also blocks pain signals at the spinal cord level without producing meaningful anti-inflammatory action. This selective mechanism makes it gentler on an infant's developing gastrointestinal lining compared with NSAIDs, which is why pediatricians commonly favor it as a first-line antipyretic for young children.
In infants, the therapeutic window between an effective dose and a harmful one is narrow. Dosing must be based on body weight rather than age alone, since infants of the same age can differ in weight by several kilograms. This is where a calibrated dropper becomes clinically important. A dropper marked in precise increments reduces the chance of accidental overdosing, which is the leading cause of paracetamol related liver injury in early childhood.
Paracetamol is recommended by major pediatric health bodies as the preferred antipyretic for infants above two months of age, largely because of its established safety record when dosed correctly. Caregivers are advised to space doses at least four to six hours apart and to check that no other product given to the infant already contains paracetamol, since accidental double dosing is a common and preventable error.

How to use Pedrol Drops 60mg?
- The bottle should be shaken gently before drawing up each dose.
- Only the calibrated dropper supplied with the bottle is meant for measuring, not a household spoon.
- Dose is based on the infant's body weight, generally around 10 to 15 mg per kg of body weight per dose.
- A typical infant weighing 4 to 6 kg is given close to 0.6 ml, while dosing should be confirmed with a pediatrician for exact weight.
- A gap of at least 4 to 6 hours is needed between two doses.
- No more than 4 doses in 24 hours unless a doctor advises otherwise.
- The dropper is best placed along the inside of the cheek rather than straight down the throat.
- Any other cold, flu or teething product in use should be checked to confirm it does not already contain paracetamol.
Drug Interactions
- Other Paracetamol Products: Combination with any other paracetamol containing syrup, drop or tablet raises the risk of accidental overdose.
- Warfarin: Regular high dose paracetamol use can mildly increase the blood thinning effect, though this is rarely relevant at infant dosing levels.
- Enzyme Inducing Medicines: Certain seizure medicines such as phenytoin or carbamazepine can raise the risk of liver stress when paracetamol is used alongside them.
Risks and warnings
- Liver Toxicity: An overdose, even a small measurement error with the dropper, can cause serious liver damage in infants because their metabolic capacity for paracetamol is still immature.
- Dosing Errors: A kitchen spoon used instead of the calibrated dropper is a common cause of accidental overdose in young children.
- Hidden Duplication: Another paracetamol containing cold or teething product given alongside these drops can push the total dose beyond a safe limit.
- Underlying Liver Disease: Infants with known liver or kidney impairment need medical supervision before this medicine is started.
- Allergic Reaction: Rash, swelling or breathing difficulty after a dose needs immediate medical attention.
Pedrol Drops Side Effects
