What Experts Say
Paracetamol acts mainly in the central nervous system. It blocks prostaglandin production in the hypothalamus, which resets the body's temperature control point and brings fever down within an hour of dosing. Its pain relieving effect works through a similar central pathway rather than blocking inflammation at the injury site.
In children, dosing is calculated by body weight rather than age alone, usually around 10 to 15 milligrams per kilogram every four to six hours, with a maximum of four to five doses a day. Physicians recommend the graduated syringe supplied with the suspension because a kitchen spoon can under or over dose a child by a wide margin.
Doctors across Pakistan see a heavy seasonal burden of viral fevers, typhoid, and dengue in children, so paracetamol remains the first line antipyretic before any NSAID is considered. Liver function stays the main safety concern, so parents are told never to exceed five doses in 24 hours or combine it with other paracetamol containing cold remedies, and to keep the child well hydrated during fever.
