What Experts Say
Favipiravir works as an RNA polymerase inhibitor. It blocks an enzyme the influenza virus needs to copy its genetic material, which slows down how fast the virus can multiply inside the body and helps the immune system gain the upper hand.
In Pakistan, favipiravir gained wider public attention during the COVID pandemic, when it was used under emergency guidance for select hospitalized cases. Its approved use today centers on certain novel or re-emerging influenza virus infections, and it remains a hospital directed treatment rather than a home remedy for an ordinary seasonal flu.
Experts are firm that Piravir should only be taken under direct medical supervision, since it carries risks in pregnancy and requires monitoring of the liver, uric acid levels and heart rhythm during treatment, especially in patients with existing heart, liver or kidney conditions that could be affected by the drug.
