About Provate-S Ointment 0.05% / 3%

Provate-S Ointment combines a steroid and salicylic acid for scaly, inflamed skin conditions.

Provate-S Ointment 0.05% / 3% Uses

  • Chronic plaque psoriasis with thick scaling
  • Scalp psoriasis with heavy flaking
  • Lichen simplex chronicus (thickened, itchy skin patches)
  • Chronic eczema with hardened, scaly plaques
  • Discoid eczema
  • Seborrheic dermatitis with thick scale build up
  • Hyperkeratotic skin patches resistant to plain steroid creams

Provate-S Ointment 0.05% / 3% Benefits

  • Salicylic acid softens and lifts thick scale so betamethasone can penetrate deeper
  • Betamethasone Dipropionate calms redness, swelling and itching quickly
  • One ointment targets both inflammation and scaling instead of using two separate products
  • Ointment base locks in moisture, useful for very dry, cracked plaques
  • Convenient once or twice daily application for localized patches

What Experts Say

Dermatologists combine a potent corticosteroid with salicylic acid specifically for plaques that plain steroid ointments fail to clear. Thick, scaly skin blocks steroid absorption, so the keratolytic action of salicylic acid is used first to break down that barrier before betamethasone can work effectively underneath it.

Because Betamethasone Dipropionate is a potent (group III) steroid, physicians usually limit this combination to short courses, generally two to four weeks, and to smaller, well defined plaques rather than widespread body areas. This reduces the chance of skin thinning while still allowing the keratolytic component to do its job on resistant scale.

Psoriasis and chronic eczema are both common presentations in dermatology clinics across Pakistan, often self treated for months with plain moisturizers before a doctor is consulted. Physicians generally recommend confirming the diagnosis first, since a combination steroid and keratolytic ointment is not appropriate for infections, acne, or thin skinned areas.

How to use Provate-S Ointment 0.05% / 3%?

  • Wash and dry your hands before applying the ointment
  • Apply a thin layer to the affected patch only, once or twice daily as advised
  • Gently rub in until absorbed, do not massage vigorously into inflamed skin
  • Avoid applying on the face, groin, underarms, or broken skin unless your doctor says otherwise
  • Do not cover the treated area with a bandage or plastic wrap unless specifically instructed
  • Wash your hands again after application unless the hands are the treated area
  • Use for the shortest duration that controls symptoms, generally two to four weeks
  • Stop and consult your doctor if the skin worsens, burns, or shows signs of infection

Drug Interactions

  • Other Topical Steroids: Combining with another steroid cream on the same area raises the risk of skin thinning
  • Other Keratolytics: Using additional salicylic acid or retinoid products on the same patch can increase irritation
  • Oral Salicylates: Large area, prolonged use alongside aspirin or other salicylate medicines may raise total salicylate levels
  • Phototherapy: Combining with UV light treatment for psoriasis should be supervised by a dermatologist
  • Live Vaccines: Extensive, prolonged steroid absorption can theoretically affect immune response to vaccines

Risks and warnings

  • Skin Thinning: Prolonged or repeated use can thin the skin, cause stretch marks, or make blood vessels visible
  • Prolonged Use: Not intended for continuous use beyond four weeks without medical review
  • Sensitive Areas: Avoid the face, eyelids, groin, and armpits, where skin absorbs more of the medicine
  • Large Surface Area: Applying over large parts of the body raises the risk of steroid and salicylate absorption into the bloodstream
  • Children: Use only under medical supervision, since children absorb topical steroids more readily than adults
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use only if a doctor advises it, and avoid applying near the nipple area while breastfeeding
  • Infected Skin: Do not use on skin with an untreated bacterial, fungal, or viral infection
  • Broken or Wounded Skin: Avoid applying on open wounds, ulcers, or raw skin, since salicylic acid absorption increases significantly
