What Experts Say
Povidone iodine surgical scrub works through a complex that slowly releases free iodine onto the skin surface. This free iodine penetrates microbial cell walls and oxidizes proteins, enzymes and nucleic acids, giving it broad activity against bacteria, fungi, viruses and bacterial spores alike.
Doctors across Pakistan advise maintaining full contact time before rinsing during a surgical scrub, since antimicrobial action depends on adequate exposure rather than a quick rinse. Surgeons commonly scrub hands and forearms for two to five minutes before gloving to lower surgical site infection risk significantly.
Physicians recommend caution in patients with known iodine sensitivity, thyroid disorders, or extensive open wounds, since repeated whole body use can allow measurable systemic iodine absorption over time. Use in neonates and during pregnancy is generally limited to short, closely supervised applications only.
