What Experts Say
Rabipur belongs to a class of vaccines called inactivated cell culture rabies vaccines. It contains a killed form of the rabies virus grown on purified chick embryo cells, so it cannot cause rabies itself. Once injected, it trains the immune system to recognize the virus and build protective antibodies before a live rabies infection can take hold.
In Pakistan, dog bites are one of the most common reasons families visit the emergency department, and rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms begin. That is why doctors treat any bite or scratch from a stray dog, cat, or monkey as a medical emergency and start this vaccine as soon as possible, ideally on the same day.
For a fresh bite, the vaccine is usually given on days 0, 3, 7, and 14 into the arm muscle, sometimes with rabies immunoglobulin injected around the wound for deeper or more severe bites. Missing a scheduled dose can weaken the protection, so clinics in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, and Rawalpindi usually keep a record and call patients to remind them of follow up visits.

Drug Interactions
- Chloroquine and Antimalarials: These medicines can lower the antibody response to Rabipur, so doctors may adjust the injection route or add extra monitoring.
- Corticosteroids and Immunosuppressants: Long term steroid or immunosuppressant use can blunt the immune response, sometimes requiring antibody level testing after vaccination.
- Other Live Vaccines: Rabipur can generally be given alongside other vaccines, but doctors usually use separate injection sites and syringes.
- Rabies Immunoglobulin: When given for severe bites, immunoglobulin should be injected at a different site from Rabipur to avoid reducing the vaccine's effect.
Risks and warnings
- Incomplete Course: Stopping the vaccine schedule before all doses are given can leave you unprotected against rabies.
- Immunosuppression: People on chemotherapy, high dose steroids, or with HIV may develop a weaker antibody response and may need extra doses or antibody testing.
- Allergic Reaction: Rare but serious allergic reactions can occur, so vaccination should be given at a facility equipped to manage them.
- Chloroquine Use: Antimalarial chloroquine can reduce the immune response to this vaccine, so the intramuscular route and full dosing schedule should be followed carefully.
- Delayed Vaccination: Waiting too long after a bite reduces how well the vaccine can prevent rabies, so early administration is critical.
