What Experts Say
Doctors often prescribe sustained release diclofenac when a patient needs steady pain and inflammation control across the day rather than repeated short acting doses. The retard formulation releases the active ingredient slowly, which helps maintain a more consistent drug level in the blood and reduces the number of daily doses needed for chronic joint conditions.
Diclofenac works by blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes that produce prostaglandins, the chemicals responsible for pain, swelling and fever. This mechanism makes it effective for conditions involving ongoing joint inflammation, but it also means the same enzyme blocking effect can reduce the stomach lining protection, which is why doctors usually pair it with gastric protection in long term use.
Clinicians generally recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed, especially in patients with existing heart, kidney or stomach conditions. Regular follow up allows doctors to monitor for early signs of gastrointestinal irritation or blood pressure changes before they become serious complications.
