What Experts Say
Rabeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor that binds irreversibly to the hydrogen potassium ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells. This blocks the final step of acid secretion no matter what triggers it, and because rabeprazole converts to its active form quickly in an acidic environment, its onset of acid suppression is often faster than several other PPIs.
Gastroenterologists commonly prescribe the 20mg strength for duodenal ulcer healing, which is typically achieved within four weeks in most patients, and for long term control of gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also included in standard triple therapy regimens with antibiotics for Helicobacter pylori eradication, a common cause of ulcers seen in Pakistani patients.
Physicians recommend using the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration once symptoms are controlled. Patients with liver impairment or those on long term therapy should have periodic review, since prolonged acid suppression can affect nutrient absorption and bone health over time.
