What Experts Say
Ropinirole is a non ergoline dopamine agonist that selectively stimulates D2 and D3 dopamine receptors in the brain. In Parkinson's disease, it partially compensates for the natural dopamine loss that causes tremor, stiffness and slow movement. In restless legs syndrome, it corrects the dopaminergic imbalance believed to drive the urge to move the legs, especially in the evening.
Doctors usually start Requip at a low dose and increase it gradually over several weeks. This slow titration reduces nausea, dizziness and low blood pressure that can occur if the dose rises too quickly. Taking each dose with food further lessens stomach upset, and full symptom benefit often takes a few weeks of consistent use to appear.
Ropinirole carries specific safety considerations. It can cause sudden episodes of sleepiness, so driving or operating machinery needs caution until response is known. Impulse control issues such as compulsive gambling or shopping have been reported, and combining it with other dopaminergic or sedating drugs raises the risk of these effects.
