What Experts Say
Clopidogrel bisulphate is a P2Y12 platelet receptor blocker. It stops platelets from clumping together, which lowers the chance of a clot forming inside a narrowed or damaged artery. This action makes it a core drug for people who have already had a heart attack, stroke, or a stent placed in a coronary artery.
Clinical guidelines list clopidogrel as a standard antiplatelet choice, either alone or combined with aspirin, depending on the patient's cardiovascular risk. Its effect builds over a few days and continues for the life of the platelet, roughly seven to ten days after the last dose. This is why doctors ask patients to stop it before planned surgery.
The main clinical concern with clopidogrel is bleeding, since the same mechanism that prevents clots also slows normal clotting after a cut or injury. Doctors weigh this risk against the benefit of stroke and heart attack prevention before prescribing it, and blood counts or liver function may be checked in long term use.
