What Experts Say
Pulmonologists often add montelukast to an asthma treatment plan when inhaled medicines alone are not fully controlling symptoms, since it works through a different pathway that specifically blocks leukotrienes, chemicals that drive airway inflammation and narrowing during an asthma flare or allergy episode.
In Pakistan, where dusty air, seasonal pollen, and heavy smog contribute significantly to both asthma flares and allergic rhinitis each year, doctors frequently prescribe montelukast for patients dealing with both conditions at once, since it addresses symptoms in the airways and the nose together in a single daily tablet.
Regulatory bodies internationally have flagged rare reports of mood or behavior changes with this medicine, so physicians generally advise families to mention any unusual irritability, sleep trouble, or low mood promptly rather than waiting for a routine visit weeks later.
Drug Class
- Leukotriene receptor antagonist

How to use Sontel tablet 10mg?
- Sontel Tablet 10mg is usually taken once daily in the evening, with or without food.
- This medicine is meant for daily prevention and is not used to treat a sudden asthma attack.
- A fast acting rescue inhaler is still needed for sudden breathing difficulty.
- The tablet is swallowed whole with water rather than chewed.
- Consistent daily use, even when symptoms feel well controlled, gives the best long term results.
- A missed dose is simply skipped rather than doubled the next day.
Drug Interactions
- Phenobarbital: This seizure medicine can lower montelukast levels and reduce its effectiveness.
- Rifampin: This antibiotic can also speed up the breakdown of montelukast in the body.
- Other Asthma Medicines: Montelukast is commonly combined with inhaled steroids or bronchodilators as part of a complete asthma plan, under medical guidance.
Risks and warnings
- Mood and Behavior Changes: Irritability, agitation, sleep disturbance, or low mood have been reported and should be discussed with a doctor promptly.
- Not for Acute Attacks: This tablet does not replace a rescue inhaler during sudden breathing difficulty.
- Liver Function: Rare liver enzyme changes have been noted, so unusual fatigue or yellowing of the skin needs review.
