  • Treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis affecting the surface of the eye
  • Management of blepharitis, a bacterial infection of the eyelid margins

  • External eye infections caused by susceptible staphylococci and gram-negative bacteria
  • Night-time antibiotic cover alongside daytime antibiotic eye drops

Tobrex Ointment 3.5g Benefits

  • Rapid bactericidal action against common eye infection organisms
  • Long contact time on the eye surface for overnight protection
  • Reliable coverage of Pseudomonas and other hard-to-treat gram-negative bacteria
  • Soothing lubricant base that eases grittiness while the infection clears
  • Compact sterile 3.5g tube that lasts a full treatment course

What Experts Say

Tobramycin is a bactericidal aminoglycoside that binds the bacterial 30S ribosomal subunit, forcing errors in protein synthesis that kill the organism outright. It stays highly active against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and other gram-negative bacteria that commonly infect the eye surface.

Ophthalmologists value the ointment form for its long contact time on the eye. A bedtime ribbon maintains antibiotic cover through the night while drops handle daytime dosing, a routine well suited to the surface eye infections frequently seen in Pakistan's hot and dusty conditions.

Ocular tolerance is generally good, with hypersensitivity such as lid itching and swelling reported in about 3 percent of users. Experts caution that prolonged use can allow fungi and resistant bacteria to overgrow, so treatment should stay within the prescribed duration and be reviewed if the eye does not improve within a few days.

How to use Tobrex Ointment 3.5g?

  • Wash your hands before opening the tube.
  • Tilt your head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  • Squeeze a thin ribbon of about 1 centimeter into the pocket while looking up.
  • Do not let the tube tip touch the eye, eyelashes, or any other surface.
  • Close the eye gently for one to two minutes so the ointment melts and spreads.
  • Apply two to three times daily, or every three to four hours in severe infection, exactly as prescribed.
  • When also using antibiotic eye drops, instill the drops first and apply the ointment last, usually at bedtime.

Drug Interactions

  • Systemic aminoglycosides: Injected gentamicin, amikacin, or tobramycin given alongside the ointment calls for monitoring of the total combined exposure.
  • Other antibiotic eye preparations: Combine additional topical ocular antibiotics only when your doctor prescribes them together.
  • Other eye drops or ointments: Leave 5 to 10 minutes between different eye medicines and always apply this ointment last.
  • Nephrotoxic or ototoxic medicines: Drugs such as cisplatin or loop diuretics carry a theoretical additive risk, although absorption from the eye is minimal.

Risks and warnings

  • Allergy: Stop use and contact a doctor if eyelid itching, swelling, or worsening redness develops.
  • Aminoglycoside cross-sensitivity: Tell your doctor about any previous reaction to gentamicin, amikacin, or neomycin before starting.
  • Blurred vision: The ointment blurs sight for several minutes after application, so avoid driving or machinery until vision clears.
  • Contact lenses: Do not wear lenses while the eye is infected or at any point during treatment.
  • Prolonged use: Extended treatment can allow fungi and resistant bacteria to overgrow, so keep to the prescribed duration.
  • Eye use only: The ointment must never be swallowed, injected, or applied inside the ears, nose, or mouth.
  • No improvement: Return to your doctor if symptoms persist beyond 48 to 72 hours of regular use.
