5 hypoglycemia episodes

My husband has type 1 diabetes. He has had no Insulin today but has had five hypoglycemia episodes today, and his sugar levels are dropping again. He had his regular food all day, drank juice and cans of coke. He has not done anything different to any other day and also has not been stressed either. He treated all attacks the way he normally would. What could be causing all these if he has not had any fast acting Insulin since last night?

Dear Patient,

With type 1 diabetes, autoimmune self-destruction of pancreatic β-cells leads eventually to an absolute requirement for insulin replacement therapy. Insulin delivered exogenously(from outside) is not subject to normal feedback regulation from the body, so it may induce hypoglycemia even in the presence of an intact counterregulatory normal response. The average individual with type 1 diabetes experiences about two episodes of symptomatic hypoglycemia per week. This risk is increased markedly with the increasing duration of the disease and strict glycemic (sugar)control. Hope this helps.
