Damaged vision

I am a policeman and tonight we were looking for a specific car. I stayed in one spot and looked at the license plate of oncoming cars. I am staring at the license plate trying to read it while also looking right into its headlights. I felt a pain in my left eye. Can car headlights cause damage to my vision?

You could use sunglasses with a suitable amount of tint to protect yourself from the direct force of glare. You could also ask your optometrist to add power to it if you are wearing spectacles for vision normally.
