Lost Eyesight

Baby girl age of 6 year suddenly lost her eyesight without any injury according to doctor it is due to optic nerve damage which cannot be cure..kindly related doctors give me opinion about it if this condition can be cured in pakistan or a foriegn country.her parents are cousins and they dont have blindness in their family history...thanks

Dear Patient,

If the child had no astigmatism, lazy eye, strabismus, glaucoma and if the vision loss is for sure due to optic nerve then that is a permanent loss. Each eye is supplied by 1 optic nerve each. The optic nerve is not like other nerves of the body, once injured it can never recover and heal itself.
However, if the diagnosis is incorrect and injury is due to any other cause like the ones above then there may be cure/recovery. Also, give her multivitamins containing Lutein & Zeaxanthin.
