One of the most relaxing parts of the day is when you take a nice hot (or cold) shower and unwind. Showers are refreshing, relaxing, and fulfilling. We are so used to taking showers that it never occurs to us that there is a right and a wrong way of taking a shower, which is why it is imperative that you are knowledgeable of mistakes that can be bad for your skin. Here are some shower mistakes that can ruin your skin in the long run according to top dermatologists in Pakistan.

1- Long Showers:

Even though you might find long showers relaxing, they could sneakily be ruining your skin. That’s because long showers can irritate and dry out skin. It is recommended that you avoid long showers and stick to between 5 and 15 minutes. Do not forget to apply a moisturizer or body lotion after the shower to keep your skin moisturized.

2- Taking Very Hot Showers:

While it may feel great when hot water comes in contact with your skin, it can actually be very drying. Extremely hot showers can strip your skin of its natural oils, making it dehydrated, dry, and itchy. They may even give you rashes. When your skin gets dry, it becomes easier for bacteria to penetrate your skin. Avoid the temptation to shower with scalding hot water and go for lukewarm water instead.

3- Using Harsh Soaps:

Using fragrant soaps that make you smell like a fresh bouquet of flowers when you step out of the shower may sound refreshing, but the reality is that such soap can irritate your skin. Use moisturizing, fragrance-free body wash instead.

4- Scrubbing Hard:

Instead of using a beady, harsh exfoliator to slough away dead skin cells, use one with natural, moisturizing ingredients that gently remove dead skin cells. Some ingredients to look for include sea salt, coconut milk, and almond oil as they can help you get rid of flakiness and give you smooth skin. Natural scrubs are also safe to use for people who have sensitive skin.

5- Using A Dirty Washcloth:

Washcloths and loofahs are breeding ground for bacteria because people typically leave them in their wet, humid shower. You can upgrade to a konjac sponge as it is naturally antibacterial and can be used for up to three months. Keep it in a dry place and let it dry before using it.

6- Shaving At The Beginning Of Your Shower:

Shaving is a cumbersome process on its own so do not complicate it further by jumping to it as soon as you hop into the shower. Reserve it for the end as it will ensure silky soft skin. The logic behind this is that after a shower, your hairs soften and your pores open, so it makes it easier to get a smoother shave. Moreover, do not leave your razor in the shower as the steam can make it rusty and speed up blunting. Soak it in baby oil instead as this way the metal will not oxidize.
