6 Natural Remedies For Cellulite

Cellulite is the dimpled-looking skin in appearance that occurs in the thigh and buttock area. Cellulite forms when fatty tissue deep in the skin pushes against connective tissue.

While cellulite has been the bane of many women’s existence, there are a few natural remedies that can be trusted to help to reduce these bumpy areas, if not removing them completely. Cellulite is the result of a combination of factors such as lifestyle, food and genetics, thus a single cause cannot be pinpointed.

For the last 50 years or so, the prevalence of cellulite has increased, according to Dr. Lionel Bassoon, the author of The Cellulite Cure. Before the middle of the 20th century, cellulite buildup was not common, however, since the latter part of the 20th century, this problematic buildup of fat in thighs and buttocks is on the rise. Infact, according to an estimate from the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery Association (ASDSA), more than 85 percent of women above the age of 21 years and above have this problem.

The causes of cellulite

As mentioned before, there is not a single cause of cellulite; rather, it is a mix of various determinants such as lifestyle, genetics, age, family history, tissue inflammation, loss of collagen, poor circulation, poor drainage of the lymph, increased fatty tissue, thin epidermis, hormones and diet. However, the exact cause of this imbalance has not yet been determined.

Moreover, there is no general classification of who will get cellulite buildup—those who are overweight, may have a higher chance of getting cellulite, but even thin women complain of it.

Why are women prone to cellulite?

In comparison to men, women have a higher concentration of alpha receptors in the thighs, as well as fewer beta receptors. This results in a higher deposition of fat cells and a bigger battle to break down the fat. The deposition of cellulite is further accentuated by an unhealthy lifestyle, too little exercise, and even tight underwear.

How to naturally get rid of cellulite

There is no magic cure for cellulite. It takes time and effort to slowly shed the extra fat, and restore the balance between connective tissue and fat tissue. It is better to try natural methods that address the root cause of cellulite formation in the first place. Here are a few things you can try:

1- Dry brushing

one of the most trusted remedies for cellulite is dry brushing. While there is not enough scientific data to back the claims of its benefits, there is enough anecdotal support from people who have used this method. Not only is dry brushing good for cellulite removal, but it also stimulates blood and lymph flow in the body. Other benefits include exfoliation of the skin, better digestion, better kidney function and opening of pores.

Dry brushing involves using a natural bristles brush to brush the skin and then moisturizing the skin with coconut oil. The purpose is to stimulate the flow of blood and lymph. It can be done once or even twice a day, ideally before showering.

The direction of dry brushing should be towards the heart, in long sweeping motions, but not back and forth. Starting at the feet, the brush should be moved up, in a circular and sweeping motion. Be gentle but firm on the skin, so that the skin is stimulated but not irritated. Similarly, on the arms, brushing should start from the hands and then towards the chest.

2- Omega-3 fatty acids

As mentioned before, the imbalance between fatty acids and connective tissue is the cause of cellulite. Thus, the intake of the right kind of fatty acids can improve the texture and appearance of cellulite. Fish oil capsules and other sources of omega-3 fatty acids taken daily for skin health can be very beneficial.

3- Coffee scrub

Not only does caffeine stimulate the blood flow and lymph, but the added benefit is also that it has a tightening effect on the skin. Moreover, it exfoliates the skin and smells great too. A simple recipe includes 1/4th cup coffee grounds, 2 tablespoons coconut oil, and some brown sugar. The scrub can be stored in the glass jar too for future use as well.

4- Healthy diet and exercise

Strength training and aerobic exercise can help add muscle to the body. A firm layer of muscle will prevent the layer of fat from becoming wrinkly and wobbly, thus reducing the appearance of cellulite.

5- Apple cider vinegar

One of the famous home remedies for cellulite is apple cider vinegar. The amino acids and probiotics contained in it can help the body create its own natural stores of stomach acid, thus aiding digestion and detoxification. This detox in turn can improve health of the connective tissue and strengthen it.

6- Coconut oil

Another great home remedy for cellulite is coconut oil massage. Mixing it with juniper essential oil can improve the texture of skin and appearance of cellulite. Juniper helps to expel toxins and make the skin look supple. Moreover, the massage helps to break the fatty deposits in the skin that give cellulite its characteristic bumpy appearance.

A mixture of a healthy lifestyle and home remedies can help improve the appearance of cellulite. If you need more help in designing a healthy lifestyle and diet for yourself, then seek professional help.
