What Experts Say
Doctors across Pakistan prescribe zoledronic acid as a once yearly intravenous infusion because it binds tightly to bone mineral and suppresses excess osteoclast activity for many months at a time. This long acting mechanism reduces the burden of daily or weekly bisphosphonate tablets for older patients who often struggle with regular dosing schedules.
Physicians recommend checking kidney function and blood calcium and vitamin D levels before every infusion, since zoledronic acid is cleared through the kidneys and can trigger a temporary drop in blood calcium. Adequate hydration on the day of infusion also helps lower the chance of short term kidney strain in older or dehydrated patients.
Specialists generally reserve zoledronic acid for patients with confirmed low bone density, a prior fragility fracture, or long term steroid use that weakens bone. A dental check is advised before the first dose, since rare jaw bone problems have occasionally been linked to long term bisphosphonate therapy.
