What Experts Say
Zoledronic acid belongs to the bisphosphonate class and works by attaching to bone surfaces and switching off overactive osteoclasts, the cells that break down bone. This slows bone loss and lowers fracture risk in osteoporosis, while also reducing skeletal complications when cancer spreads to bone.
Because it is given as an intravenous infusion, doctors check kidney function before each dose, since the drug is cleared by the kidneys and can worsen existing renal impairment. Adequate hydration and calcium plus vitamin D supplementation are usually advised around the infusion to lower the risk of low blood calcium.
Long term use has been linked to a rare but serious complication called osteonecrosis of the jaw, so dental checkups before starting therapy are recommended. Patients are also monitored for flu like symptoms after the first infusion, which usually settle within a few days without specific treatment.
