What Experts Say
Ceftriaxone is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It works by blocking bacteria from building a stable cell wall, which causes the bacteria to weaken and die. Its broad spectrum activity against gram positive and gram negative bacteria makes it useful when the exact organism is not yet identified.
Clinicians often prefer ceftriaxone for its long half life, which allows once daily dosing even in serious infections. It is cleared through both the liver and kidneys, so it remains an option in mild kidney impairment. Its ability to reach the cerebrospinal fluid also makes it useful for central nervous system infections like meningitis.
Because ceftriaxone is widely prescribed, experts recommend using it only for confirmed or strongly suspected bacterial infections, not viral illness. Overuse adds to antibiotic resistance, a growing concern in general practice. Patients allergic to penicillin should be evaluated first, since cross reactivity with cephalosporins can occur in some cases.
