Mebendazole is an anthelmintic. It stops worms from taking up sugar, which they need for energy, so they die and pass out in the stool. Very little enters the bloodstream, which explains its good safety record.

For pinworm, one dose is usually repeated after two weeks, and family members are often treated together. For roundworm, whipworm and hookworm, a three day course is common. Washing hands, trimming nails and washing bedding help stop reinfection. Symptoms of worms include stomach ache, itching around the anus at night, poor appetite and weight loss in children. Stool tests are used when the type of worm is unclear.
