What Experts Say
Rheumatologists often describe diacerein as a different kind of osteoarthritis treatment compared with ordinary painkillers. Its relief does not appear within hours the way a standard tablet does, since it works by calming the inflammatory signals inside the joint that gradually wear down cartilage over time.
Most specialists recommend staying on therapy for at least four to six weeks before judging whether it is helping, because the benefit tends to build gradually rather than appearing overnight. Once it does take effect, many patients notice the improvement in stiffness and mobility continues for weeks even after the capsule is stopped.
Since diacerein is processed by the liver and can loosen stools in some people, doctors usually order periodic liver function tests during long term use. Anyone with a history of liver disease, chronic diarrhea, or bowel conditions should mention this before starting the medicine, since a lower dose or closer monitoring may be advised.
