What Experts Say
Cefoperazone is a third generation cephalosporin that stops bacteria from building their cell walls, which causes the bacterial cells to break apart and die. Sulbactam on its own has weak antibacterial action, but it blocks the beta lactamase enzyme that many resistant bacteria use to destroy cephalosporins.
When combined, the two drugs restore Cefoperazone's effectiveness against bacteria that would otherwise resist it, giving the injection a broader spectrum than Cefoperazone alone. This combination is commonly reserved for moderate to severe infections in hospital settings where resistant organisms are a concern.
Experts advise that the drug is given only through intravenous or intramuscular routes under medical supervision, since oral absorption is negligible. Kidney and liver function are usually checked before extended courses, as both organs play a role in clearing the medicine from the body.
