What Experts Say
Physicians across Pakistan prescribe moxifloxacin, the active ingredient in Barimox Tablet, for respiratory and skin infections where common antibiotics have failed or resistance is suspected. As a fourth generation fluoroquinolone, it works by blocking two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy their genetic material. This dual action makes resistance harder to develop compared to older antibiotics.
Clinical guidelines generally reserve fluoroquinolones like moxifloxacin for infections where first line antibiotics are unsuitable due to allergy, prior treatment failure or documented resistance. Experts caution that this class carries a higher risk of tendon injury, nerve damage and heart rhythm changes than many other antibiotic groups, so it should not be used routinely for minor infections.
Physicians also stress that the full course must be completed exactly as prescribed, even if symptoms improve early. Stopping the medicine too soon allows surviving bacteria to develop resistance, which limits future treatment options for the same infection.
