Moxifloxacin is a fourth generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by blocking two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, that bacteria need to copy their genetic material and multiply. This dual action lowers the chance of bacteria developing resistance during a short course of treatment.

Applied directly to the eye, moxifloxacin reaches high concentrations in the tear film, cornea and aqueous humor within minutes of instillation. Very little of the drug enters the bloodstream, which keeps the treatment focused on the eye and reduces the risk of body wide side effects that are more common with oral antibiotics.

Ophthalmologists often prefer moxifloxacin because it covers both gram positive and gram negative organisms, including several strains that have grown resistant to older fluoroquinolones. It is also commonly used before and after eye surgery to lower the risk of postoperative infection and to protect wound healing.

How to use Megamox Ophthalmic Solution 0.5%?

• Wash Hands Thoroughly Before Touching The Bottle Or Eye
• Tilt The Head Back And Pull Down The Lower Eyelid To Form A Small Pocket
• Instill One Drop Into The Affected Eye As Directed By The Doctor
• Avoid Letting The Dropper Tip Touch The Eye, Eyelid Or Any Surface
• Close The Eye Gently For 1 To 2 Minutes And Press On The Inner Corner To Limit Drainage
• Wait At Least 5 Minutes Before Using Any Other Eye Drop
• Remove Contact Lenses Before Application And Wait As Advised By The Doctor Before Reinserting Them
• Complete The Full Course Even If Symptoms Improve Earlier

Drug Interactions

• Other Eye Drops: Space other topical eye medicines at least 5 minutes apart to avoid diluting the effect.
• Systemic Antibiotics: No significant interaction is expected since topical moxifloxacin has minimal systemic absorption.
• Oral Fluoroquinolones: Using an oral fluoroquinolone at the same time does not require dose adjustment of the eye drop, but the doctor should be informed.
