What Experts Say
Moxifloxacin blocks two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy their genetic material and multiply. Without these enzymes working properly, the bacteria cannot grow or repair themselves and are eventually cleared by the immune system.
Physicians usually reserve it for infections where more commonly used antibiotics have failed, are not suitable, or where broader coverage is needed, since fluoroquinolones carry more serious risks than many other antibiotic classes. A typical course runs five to fourteen days depending on the infection being treated.
Self medicating with leftover antibiotic tablets for a cough or sore throat is common when clinic visits feel inconvenient or costly, but this practice fuels resistance and can mask a more serious infection. Hot, humid conditions that encourage bacterial respiratory infections make correct, doctor guided antibiotic use even more important.
