What Experts Say
Betamethasone valerate is a potent topical corticosteroid that binds glucocorticoid receptors in skin cells. It suppresses the release of inflammatory chemicals, narrows dilated blood vessels and reduces capillary permeability. This action explains why redness, swelling and itching settle within days of regular use.
Neomycin sulphate is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that blocks bacterial protein synthesis by binding the 30S ribosomal subunit. It covers many gram negative organisms and some gram positive strains commonly found in infected or broken skin. Pairing it with a steroid prevents infection from worsening while inflammation is being controlled.
Dermatologists favour the ointment base for thick, dry or scaly lesions because its greasy formulation improves drug penetration and locks in moisture better than a cream or lotion. Because betamethasone is potent, prolonged or extensive application can thin the skin and allow measurable systemic absorption, so short defined courses under medical guidance are recommended.
