What Experts Say
Cefaclor belongs to the second generation cephalosporin family, which offers a wider spectrum against Haemophilus influenzae and Moraxella catarrhalis compared with first generation cephalosporins. This makes it a useful option for respiratory and ear infections in children when amoxicillin resistance is a concern.
Doctors choose the 250mg/5ml suspension strength for older children or heavier body weights, since dosing is calculated on a milligram per kilogram basis, usually 20mg to 40mg per kg per day divided into doses. Twice daily dosing schedules are common and improve how consistently a course is completed.
Cross reactivity with penicillin allergy is possible but uncommon, so doctors take a careful allergy history before prescribing. Physicians also caution against stopping the course early once symptoms ease, since incomplete antibiotic courses contribute to resistant bacterial strains.
