What Experts Say

Cironex contains escitalopram, the active S-enantiomer of citalopram. It belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class of antidepressants. SSRIs are widely recommended as the first-line treatment for depression and anxiety due to their established safety and tolerability profile.

The medicine works by blocking the reuptake of serotonin at the synapse. This keeps more serotonin available between nerve cells in the brain. Over time, this increased serotonin activity helps improve mood, reduce anxiety, and restore emotional balance.

Escitalopram is highly selective for the serotonin transporter, which reduces the risk of side effects seen with older antidepressants. Full therapeutic effects typically appear within four to eight weeks of consistent use.

Dosage and Administration

  • Adults (depression and anxiety): 10 mg once daily; may be increased to 20 mg after one week if needed

  • Elderly patients: 10 mg per day is the recommended dose; higher doses provide no additional benefit

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered on the same day. If it is almost time for the next dose, the missed dose should be skipped. Two doses should never be taken at once. A doctor should be consulted if doses are missed frequently.

Overdose

An overdose of Cironex may cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, rapid heartbeat, tremors, and in severe cases, seizures or loss of consciousness. Emergency medical care should be sought immediately if an overdose is suspected.

How Long Does Cironex Tablet Take to Work

Improvements in sleep, energy, or appetite may be noticed within one to two weeks of starting Cironex. However, full relief from depressive or anxiety symptoms generally takes four to eight weeks of consistent use.

The medication should be continued as prescribed even if results are not immediately felt. Stopping early without medical guidance can lead to a return of symptoms.

Stopping Cironex Tablet

Cironex should never be stopped suddenly without consulting a doctor. Abrupt discontinuation may cause dizziness, nausea, irritability, and flu-like symptoms. A doctor will reduce the dose gradually to prevent these effects.
