What Experts Say
Inhaled corticosteroids such as beclometasone dipropionate are considered first line preventer therapy for persistent asthma. Delivering the steroid directly into the airways allows a much lower dose than oral steroids while still controlling inflammation effectively.
Clinical guidelines note that regular use, even when the patient feels well, is what keeps airway inflammation suppressed. Skipping doses or using the inhaler only during flare ups reduces its protective effect and increases the risk of exacerbations.
Experts also stress correct inhaler technique and mouth rinsing after each dose. This single habit meaningfully lowers the risk of oral thrush and hoarseness, which are the most common local side effects reported with inhaled steroids.

Drug Interactions

- Ritonavir and Other Protease Inhibitors: Can increase steroid exposure when used together.
- Other Corticosteroids: Combined use with oral or injectable steroids raises the risk of systemic side effects.
- Diuretics: May add to the risk of low potassium levels when combined with high dose inhaled steroids.
Risks and warnings
- Not for Acute Attacks: This is a preventer inhaler and does not relieve sudden asthma attacks or breathlessness, a fast acting reliever inhaler is needed for that.
- Oral Thrush: Mouth and throat candidiasis can develop if the mouth is not rinsed after each dose.
- Hoarseness: Voice changes and throat irritation may occur with regular use.
- Growth Monitoring in Children: Long term use in children should include regular height checks by the doctor.
- High Dose Systemic Effects: Prolonged use at high doses may affect adrenal function and bone density, so the lowest effective dose should be used.
