What Experts Say
Fluticasone propionate belongs to the medium potency class of topical corticosteroids. It works by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in skin cells, which reduces the release of inflammatory chemicals like prostaglandins and cytokines. This action explains why redness, swelling and itching settle down within a few days of regular use.
Dermatologists generally recommend Cutivate cream for short, defined treatment courses rather than continuous long term use. Using the cream continuously for more than a few weeks, especially on thin skin areas like the face, groin or underarms, raises the risk of skin thinning, stretch marks and visible blood vessels. Most specialists advise stepping down to a milder steroid or a moisturizer once symptoms improve.
Compared to stronger corticosteroids, fluticasone propionate carries a lower risk of systemic absorption when applied correctly on limited body areas. In Pakistan, hot and humid weather can increase skin moisture and absorption through broken or irritated skin, so clinicians usually pair this cream with proper wound care advice for patients with extensive or weeping skin lesions.
