What Experts Say
Endocrinologists describe Dapagliflozin as a shift away from older diabetes drugs that rely on the pancreas. It lowers blood sugar by making the kidneys remove extra glucose through urine. This mechanism means the risk of low blood sugar stays low when the drug is used alone.
Cardiologists have taken a growing interest in this drug class because trial data links it to fewer hospital admissions for heart failure, even in people without diabetes. Kidney specialists report similar findings, noting it slows the decline of kidney function over time in high risk patients. This makes it a rare medicine that serves three specialties at once.
Doctors treating patients in Pakistan note that genital yeast infections and mild dehydration are the most common early complaints, especially in hot weather. They generally advise steady fluid intake and prompt reporting of any burning or itching. Regular kidney function and blood pressure checks are recommended during the first few months of therapy.

Risks and warnings

- Genital infections: Raises the risk of yeast infections in both men and women due to sugar in urine
- Amputation risk: Some studies link SGLT2 inhibitors to a higher risk of foot and leg amputation, so foot care matters
- Surgery: Should usually be stopped a few days before scheduled surgery, as advised by your doctor
