What Experts Say
Dapagliflozin belongs to the SGLT2 inhibitor class. It works by blocking glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, which allows excess sugar to leave the body through urine instead of staying in the bloodstream. This mechanism lowers blood sugar without directly increasing insulin levels.
Clinical studies show that Dapagliflozin also offers benefits beyond blood sugar control. It has been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure & to slow the progression of chronic kidney disease in adults with type 2 diabetes, which is why doctors often prescribe it even when blood sugar is only moderately elevated.
Because the drug works through the kidneys, adequate hydration is important, especially in hot climates. Patients should also watch for signs of genital yeast infections or urinary tract infections, which occur more often with SGLT2 inhibitors due to increased glucose in the urine. Regular kidney function monitoring is recommended during long term use.
