About Diar-DS Tablet 250mg/200mg
A double-strength tablet for treating amoebic infections and related intestinal parasites.
Diar-DS Tablet Uses
- Intestinal amoebiasis caused by Entamoeba histolytica
- Amoebic dysentery with blood and mucus in stool
- Mixed infections involving both amoebic cysts and trophozoites
- Giardiasis and other protozoal bowel infections
- Chronic carrier states where amoebic cysts persist after an acute infection
Diar-DS Tablet Benefits
- A combination of two medicines acting on different stages of the amoeba life cycle
- Coverage of both active infection and the cyst stage that can otherwise cause relapse
- Fewer separate medicines needed for treating amoebic dysentery
- Double strength formula that shortens treatment courses compared to single-ingredient options
What Experts Say
Diloxanide furoate acts mainly on amoebic cysts inside the intestine, while metronidazole targets the active, disease-causing trophozoite form. Prescribing both together covers the full life cycle of Entamoeba histolytica in one course.
Infectious disease specialists usually confirm amoebiasis through stool microscopy or antigen testing before starting this combination, since treating ordinary diarrhea with it offers no benefit and unnecessary use encourages antibiotic resistance. Alcohol must be avoided throughout treatment because metronidazole can cause a severe reaction with it.
A typical course lasts seven to ten days, and doctors stress finishing the full course even after symptoms settle. Stopping the medicine early can leave amoebic cysts behind in the gut, allowing the infection to return within weeks and sometimes spread to other family members through poor sanitation.

How to use Diar-DS Tablet 250mg/200mg?
- This tablet is usually taken with a full glass of water after meals to limit stomach upset.
- The standard adult course runs for seven to ten days, or as directed by the doctor.
- Doses are generally spaced evenly through the day, commonly three times daily, to keep a steady effect on the parasite.
- Alcohol and alcohol-based products are strictly avoided during treatment and for at least two days after the last dose.
- The full course is completed even if loose motions stop early, since the amoeba can still be present as cysts.
- A missed dose is taken as soon as it is remembered, unless the next dose is nearly due.
Drug Interactions
- Alcohol: Combining alcohol with metronidazole causes a disulfiram-like reaction, leading to flushing, vomiting and a rapid heartbeat.
- Warfarin and other blood thinners: Metronidazole can increase their effect and raise bleeding risk, so clotting tests need closer monitoring.
- Lithium: Metronidazole can raise lithium levels in the blood, increasing the risk of toxicity.
- Phenytoin and phenobarbital: These can lower metronidazole levels and reduce its effectiveness.
- Cimetidine: This medicine can slow the breakdown of metronidazole, increasing the chance of side effects.
Risks and warnings
- Alcohol interaction: Metronidazole can cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, including flushing, nausea and rapid heartbeat.
- Pregnancy: This medicine is generally avoided in the first trimester unless a doctor decides the benefit clearly outweighs the risk.
- Neurological conditions: People with a history of seizures or nerve disorders need close monitoring, since metronidazole can rarely affect the nervous system.
- Liver impairment: Dose adjustment may be needed in significant liver disease, since both ingredients are processed by the liver.
- Blood disorders: A history of blood dyscrasias calls for caution and periodic blood count checks during longer courses.
- Breastfeeding: Metronidazole passes into breast milk, so a doctor's advice is needed before use while nursing.
