Entamizole Syrup Uses

Entamizole syrup is a combination of metronidazole and diloxanide furoate. Metronidazole is an antibiotic and antiprotozoal drug that does not show any action against viral infections. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria or protozoa.

Moreover, diloxanide furoate is an antiprotozoal drug that helps eradicate protozoa in asymptomatic patients. It can be given alone. But most commonly, it is given in combination with metronidazole.

Entamizole syrup is given in all age groups. From children to elders. If you have a complaint of stomach ache and diarrhea, your healthcare provider might prescribe it if they suspect you have a stomach infection.

Risks and warnings

You should know the risks and warnings of Entamizole to prevent its misuse.

There are some specific circumstances under which the use of certain medications is contraindicated or considered dangerous. So when taking any medicine it's always a good practice to familiarize yourself with its risks and warnings.

The risks and warnings associated with Entamizole are:

1. Pregnant or breastfeeding

Pregnant women should not take Entamizole unless advised otherwise by their doctor. Women who are breastfeeding should also consult their healthcare provider before taking Entamizole.

2. Allergic to Entamizole

If you are allergic to metronidazole or diloxanide furoate, do not take Entamizole or any other medicine with the same generic name. Allergies can be mild, but in certain cases, people may also have a severe reaction, known as anaphylactic shock. In this condition, the person is under an imminent threat of death, unless they are given immediate medical care or shot from an EpiPen. Thus, disclose all your allergies to your healthcare provider so that your medical history contains all pertinent information.

3. Non-susceptible Organisms

Entamizole should be given to the patient only when the organism is sensitive to it. If not, it can lead to antibiotic resistance, making it difficult to treat infections next time. Mostly, it applies to stomach infections.

4. Seizures

If you have a history of seizures or renal impairment, you must avoid Entamizole as it can provoke seizures. Also, if you have conditions that can cause seizures, like a brain tumor, brain injury, or cerebral atherosclerosis, you must take Entamizole with caution. Moreover, you must inform your healthcare provider about your complete health condition.

5. Kidney Failure

If your kidneys are not functioning well, your healthcare provider may prescribe milder drugs, or lower dosages, to not overwhelm your kidneys.

Our kidneys perform the vital task of removing toxins and waste products from the body. However, when kidneys are malfunctioning, naturally, their output is decreased i.e., less waste is removed from the body. Thus, patients should put less load on the kidney, as otherwise, the toxins accumulate in the body, which hurts the health of the person. Therefore if you have kidney disease, you should only take Entamizole with the permission of your healthcare provider.

6. Liver Diseases

Patients with liver disease should take Entamizole with caution. The liver does the metabolism and excretion of drugs in the body. However, in cases where the liver is not working efficiently due to failure or disease, the drugs get accumulated in the body. That jeopardizes the health of the person.

7. Mental Disorders

If you have any mental disorder like depression and anxiety, you must take Entamizole with caution as it can worsen the preexisting condition. Always tell your healthcare provider about the health conditions you have.

8. Alcohol Intake

You must avoid alcohol intake with Entamizole as it may cause severe adverse effects.

9. Peripheral Neuropathy

Entamizole can exacerbate peripheral neuropathy. Therefore, avoid its use if you already have the same condition.

10. Anticoagulants or Bleeding Disorders

If you are taking anticoagulants for thinning of your blood, or you have any bleeding disorder, take Entamizole with caution on the advice of a healthcare provider.
