What Experts Say
Levonorgestrel is a progestin-only emergency contraceptive approved by the WHO and FDA. It works through multiple mechanisms: delaying ovulation if taken before the surge of luteinizing hormone, preventing fertilization by altering cervical mucus consistency, and possibly inhibiting implantation by modifying the endometrial lining.
The medication is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, ideally within 12 hours, but remains effective up to 72 hours post-intercourse. Efficacy decreases with time, declining significantly after 120 hours. Peak plasma levels occur within 1 to 2 hours of administration.
Levonorgestrel is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and undergoes hepatic metabolism. It does not terminate an existing pregnancy and is distinct from mifepristone (abortion pill). Regular use as a routine contraceptive is not recommended due to lower efficacy compared to other contraceptive methods.
