What Experts Say

Ofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that stops bacteria from copying their DNA, which kills them. Placed directly in the eye, it reaches high levels at the infected surface with little reaching the bloodstream. Its broad spectrum covers common culprits such as Staphylococcus, Streptococcus and Pseudomonas species.

It works on both gram positive and gram negative organisms, which covers most causes of bacterial conjunctivitis. It does not work on viral or allergic red eye, so the cause should be confirmed before use. Bacterial pink eye usually produces sticky yellow or green discharge, unlike the watery discharge of viral infection.

Finishing the full course matters even when the eye looks better, to avoid relapse and resistance. Eye pain, reduced vision or light sensitivity need urgent assessment by an eye doctor. Never share the bottle, and wash hands often to prevent spread to the other eye or to family members.

How to use Exocin Ophthalmic Solution?

• Adults and children over 1 year: 1 to 2 drops in the affected eye every 2 to 4 hours for the first 2 days, then 4 times daily as prescribed.
• Wash hands, tilt the head back and drop into the lower eyelid pocket without touching the bottle tip.
• Close the eye gently for a minute and press the inner corner to limit drainage.
• Complete the course advised by the doctor, usually up to 10 days.

Drug Interactions

• Other eye drops: Wait at least 5 minutes between different eye medicines.
• Oral fluoroquinolones: Using them together adds to the total antibiotic exposure, so tell the doctor.
• Steroid eye drops: They may be combined for some conditions, but only under a doctor's supervision.

Risks and warnings

• Fluoroquinolone allergy: Do not use if you have had an allergic reaction to ofloxacin or similar antibiotics.
• Contact lenses: Do not wear lenses during treatment of an eye infection.
• Prolonged use: Long use may allow resistant bacteria or fungi to grow, so use only for the prescribed period.
