FML Eye Drops Benefits

  • Brings fast relief from eye redness, itching and swelling
  • Carries a lower risk of raising eye pressure than stronger steroids like dexamethasone
  • Suitable for short courses of treatment after eye surgery
  • Works well for milder, longer lasting inflammatory eye conditions
  • Comes in an easy to use suspension drop form

What Experts Say

Fluorometholone is a synthetic corticosteroid that works directly on the tissues of the eye. It binds to glucocorticoid receptors inside cells and blocks the release of substances that trigger inflammation, including prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This action reduces capillary dilation, limits fluid leakage from blood vessels, and slows the movement of inflammatory cells into ocular tissue, which together explain the drop in redness and swelling seen with regular use.

Compared with stronger ocular steroids such as prednisolone or dexamethasone, fluorometholone penetrates the front chamber of the eye less readily. This lower penetration means it is less likely to raise intraocular pressure during short courses of treatment, which is why many eye specialists prefer it for milder inflammatory conditions or for patients who need steroid therapy for a longer stretch of time.

Because corticosteroids can mask an underlying infection or slow the healing of the corneal surface, ophthalmologists usually prescribe fluorometholone drops in a tapering schedule rather than stopping treatment abruptly. Regular eye pressure checks are recommended whenever the drops are used for more than a couple of weeks, particularly in people who already have a tendency toward high eye pressure or a family history of glaucoma.

How to use FML Eye Drops 0.1%?

  • Wash hands thoroughly before using the drops.
  • Shake the bottle well before each use since it is a suspension.
  • Tilt the head back and pull the lower eyelid down gently to form a small pocket.
  • Instill the prescribed number of drops into the pocket without touching the dropper tip to the eye.
  • Close the eye gently for 1 to 2 minutes and press lightly on the inner corner of the eye.
  • Wait at least 5 minutes before applying any other eye drop.
  • Avoid wearing contact lenses while using the drops unless your doctor approves.

Drug Interactions

  • Other Eye Drops: Using multiple eye drops together can dilute effectiveness, so space them at least 5 minutes apart.
  • Contact Lenses: Soft contact lenses can absorb the preservative in the drops, so lenses should be removed before use and reinserted after 15 minutes.
  • Other Ocular Steroids: Combining with other steroid eye preparations increases the risk of raised eye pressure and should be avoided unless directed by a doctor.
  • Antiglaucoma Drops: Regular eye pressure monitoring is needed if used alongside glaucoma medicines since steroid use can worsen eye pressure control.

Risks and warnings

  • Raised Eye Pressure: Prolonged use can raise intraocular pressure and lead to glaucoma, especially in people with a family history of the condition.
  • Cataract Risk: Long term or repeated use of steroid eye drops has been linked to posterior subcapsular cataract formation.
  • Delayed Healing: The drops can slow corneal and scleral wound healing, so caution is needed after eye surgery or injury.
  • Infection Risk: Steroid use can mask or worsen viral, fungal and bacterial eye infections, including herpes simplex keratitis.
  • Not for Undiagnosed Red Eye: Avoid use in unexamined red eye since it may worsen an underlying infection.

FML Eye Drops Side Effects

  • Temporary blurred vision right after application
  • Mild burning or stinging sensation
  • Eye irritation or watering

  • Reduced vision from cataract with long term use
